VHS Video Cassettes

VHS Cassette Tapes

VHS (short for Video Home System) cassette tapes are the most common tapes that we think of that go into the household VCR (Video Cassette Recorder.) The expected life span of a VHS tape is 10-25 years, although we have had very good/decent results transferring VHS videotapes to digital that are 30+ years old.

Sometimes VHS tapes can get jammed in the cassette shell, or the tape can break. In that case, we can take the VHS cassette shell apart and attempt to re-thread the tape into a different VHS case. We have had a lot of success in “saving” and converting to digital customers’ VHS tapes that could no longer be played on a VCR.

Camcorder Cassette Tapes 8 mm/Hi8

8mm camcorder tapes, and their predecessor the Hi8 camcorder tapes were an extremely popular format for smaller, consumer camcorders. There was also a more recent, digital format on the same type of cassette shell known as Digital8. These tapes typically transfer very well to digital, although their life expectancy is actually considered to be around 7-10 years before they degrade. Most of the 8mm tapes that we transfer, though, have beautiful picture quality.

Film Reels, 8mm/Super8

Film Reels, 8mm/Super8

We LOVE scanning 8mm film reels! The picture quality, aside from the typical movie film “dust and scratches” is generally very good for its age. The colors are very vibrant. The expected life of 8mm film reels, if stored properly, is around 70 years! The problem with this format is that they are getting harder and harder to view, due to the increasing scarcity of movie projectors and viewers.

Open Reel/Reel-to-Reel Audio Tape

Open Reel/Reel-to-Reel Audio Tapes

Long before cassette tapes were made popular for consumer use, the reel to reel audio tape was used in professional studios, and became more and more popular for home use in the 1960s. The expected tape life of audio on open reel tapes is 10-30 years. Degradation starts almost immediately once it is played, just like in records, but the pace is much slower since there is a lot less physical contact. We have had excellent luck converting open reel tapes to digital format.
